DUKE’S OCEANFEST SUNSET ON THE BEACH CELEBRATION FEATURES Waikiki: Riding the Waves of Change, 24 August 2007
With an almost full moon at the side of the screen, a star filled sky and gentle waves the magic of Waikiki was very present as our film filled the big screen on this anniversary of Duke Kahanamoku's birth. Ironically the day started with a "Paddle Out" for treasured Waikiki Beach Boy, "Dukie", it was a sad reminder of the seven Beach Boys we've lost just during the making of this film. We are so glad that "Dukie" did see it at our preview and that we do have those now gone recorded.
We were thrilled to see our dream and efforts come to pass in such an appropriate venue and especially thank Jim Fulton of Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, Outrigger Hotels and the Waikiki Improvement Association for making this happen.
The audience watched intently and we are gratified by general comments as to the amount of "content" in the film, the delight in the music both territorial and contemporary and the following:
"My respect for the Waikiki Beach Boys is unbounded. I first imagined they were boys who rented surfboards but now I know them as men who teach life lessons. Travel to Waikiki with this documentary and experience the wisdom and generosity that lives within their Aloha hearts." James Bradley, Author Flags of Our Fathers Flyboys
HARD ROCK CAFE We are glad that Waikiki: Riding the Waves of Change could contribute to the fundraiser for retired Lifeguard Captain, Ivan Harada at the Hard Rock Café, September 5, 2007.
Many long time surfers and people from the beach community were there. It was gratifying to see everyone gathering around the monitors responding to their friends in the film - including old surfing buddies Conrad Canha and Jessie Kalima apparently enjoying the film, and reminiscing. After the showing we had a call from Kogi who surfed Bonzai Pipeline as Didi described in the film. Kogi hadn't seen him for 40 years and was excited to reconnect with him. It touches our hearts that the film is bringing people back together to remember the good old days!
Special thanks to Steve Dolce' for giving us the opportunity to be part of this event. Thanks also to Stephen Szabo, President and Senior Editor of DigitalEdge Hawaii. An expert in his field, we appreciate his dependability and professionalism .
BISHOP MUSEUM We are pleased to announce that Waikiki: Riding the Waves of Change will be included in the Bishop Museum latest photographic exhibition entitled SURFING: Images from the Bishop Museum Archives in Castle Memorial Building, September 15-29, 2007. DVD copies will be available for sale in the Gift Shop.

On June 28, 07 we had a private screening of Waikiki: Riding the Waves of Change for the Beach Boys, Beach Community, our sponsors and contributors. Over 200 people came and many, many thanks to Jimmy Gusukuma of Rainbow Drive In and his crew who prepared dinner for everyone - It was a delight to watch the film with an audience seeing it for the first time. When making a film, you tend to question everything and perspective can get lost so we were very touched and gratified by the responses.
"Mahalo nui! What a wonderful piece of work. The often referred to but somewhat difficult to exactly define ”Spirit of Aloha”, was visible and almost palpable in the movie, and in the eyes and hearts of those present at yesterdays screening. You have created an instant classic. Congratulations."
Aloha, Norm Retheford.
"This film should be a prerequisite for all the newcomers who begin to work on the beach. The younger generation would have an understanding of the shoes they are trying to fill."
Judy Jackson
"Congratulations again on a successful and beautiful production! We're honored to be a part of it. PS: Mr. Jenkins (Leonard), one of the featured Beach Boys and musician, was Daniel's teacher from St. Louis. It was a nice surprise to see him!”
Lydia Myashiro Ho, wife of Daniel Ho, three-time Grammy Award Winner, whose music is in the film.
"Thank you for an absolutely marvelous film. Your endeavor and action to produce such a classicly well captured time capsule of the Waikiki culture is a mind blower. Your film is worthy of more than you can imagine...it is perfectly documented...Don't give up...the journey has just started. The rest of the world needs to see it! Your marvelous. A Hui Hou!
Robert Huber, longtime member of the Beach and Film communities.
